Baltic Sea Programme Conference 2008: presentations & photos

The Baltic Sea Region Programme Conference 2008 was launched on 26 November in Tallinn. Estonian President, Mr Toomas Hendrik Ilves welcomed more than 500 participants from the whole Baltic Sea region. Delegates came from governmental organisations, European Commission, European Parliament, pan-Baltic organisations, local and regional administration and private companies. Participants of the conference were informed about the start-up of the Baltic Sea Programme and about the EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region.

In the period 2007-2013 the Baltic Sea Region Programme will co-finance transnational co-operation projects in fields of innovations, transport, environment, development of cities and regions with 222 million Euros. First 24 projects were approved in October this year, and three of them explained their aims and activities to the participants of the conference.

Speakers declared their support and personal commitment to the co-operation in the region and to the EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region. The aim of the Strategy is to coordinate the efforts of the decision makers to stimulate growth and balanced development of the region. It is the first time in history that the EU develops a strategy for a geographic macro-region - the Baltic Sea region.

The quiz "What do you know about the Baltic Sea region" was quite a challenging task for many participants. The winners of the quiz are Teresia Blomberg and Hannu Siitonen, who gave 6 correct answers out of 8 questions.

The conference was organised by the Baltic Sea Region Programme 2007-2013 in close co-operation with the Estonian Ministry of the Interior and the Nordic Council of Ministers' Office in Estonia.
