EU – Russia cooperation in the Baltic Sea region: new projects in the area of energy efficiency, transport, culture, health and social well-being

Ten new projects are launched in the Baltic Sea region, strengthening cooperation between the European Union and the Russian Federation. These projects have been selected by the EU Delegation to Russia following the 2011 call for proposals aimed at local authorities and non-state actors in the Baltic Sea region. The total budget of the actions is 3.5 million euro. The complete list of the projects can be found on the EU Delegation's website, under the file "AWARD".

The projects fall under priorities of the Northern Dimension in the area of energy efficiency, transport, culture, health and social wellbeing and will be implemented by non-governmental organisations and universities from Russia and the EU.

One of the approved initiatives is RBGC Russia, which is a sister project to the Rail Baltica Growth Corridor project financed by the Baltic Sea Region Programme 2007-2013.

RBGC Russia extends activities of the mother project towards the North-West Russia in order to gain full geographical partnership for the joint development work in the fields of passenger and freight traffic. The project brings the Russia-EU cooperation into an operational level within national, regional and local authorities, transport and logistics stakeholders as well as academia in the Eastern Baltic Sea region.

In the Baltic Sea Region Programme 2007-2013 Russian institutions join projects as associated organisations. They support the implementation of the projects. Yet, as the financing agreement between Russia and EU was not signed, organisation from Russia cannot receive co-financing from the Baltic Sea Region Programme.
