EU budget for cooperation on the EU’s external border adopted

Belarus and Russia plan to join Interreg Baltic Sea Region. Many project developers are ready to take on board partners from Russia and Belarus. Yet, some important steps in the Programme‘s development remain to be taken. Now, the European Commission has taken one such step: in October, an allocation of EUR 8.8 million was earmarked from the European Neighbourhood Instrument to support partners from Russia and Belarus in joint projects.

Before the Programme can grant EU funding to Russian and Belarusian partners, the Financing Agreements between the Governments of each country and the European Commission will have to be negotiated and concluded. At this point it is not clear when this will be done. For the first call for applications in Interreg Baltic Sea Region, future applicants are invited to include cooperation partners from Russia and Belarus as associated organisations. Their participation will have to be financed from other than the Programme funds.
