Summary description of the project:

Biogas is a completely renewable energy source produced from household waste, sewage sludge and agricultural residues. Locally produced and used as vehicle fuel, biogas is an important part of the sustainable eco-cycle. The use of biogas as vehicle fuel will lower emissions and substitute fossil fuels. It will strengthen the role of public transport as an efficient strategy to limit the impact from traffic on climate change.

In the main stage Baltic Biogas Bus project (2009-2012) cities and regions around the Baltic Sea teamed up to generate strategies and analysis on necessary measures for biogas production, distribution and bus operations. The extension stage Baltic Biogas Bus aims to demonstrate ways to further improve the business case of biogas buses. This is done by facilitating upgrading of more biogas to transport fuel and by enhancing the energy efficiency of biogas buses and the use of biogas as transport fuel.

The project features investments in eco-driving systems and training to raise fuel efficiency, hybrid electric biogas buses and a small-scale biogas upgrading facility. All investments are prepared, monitored and evaluated by the whole partner group including partners from Sweden, Norway, Germany, Poland, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.

Politicians, decision makers and associated partners are involved to achieve maximum multiplier impact of the investments. All results and conclusions are compared and exchanged throughout the Baltic Sea Region. This is further strengthened through international events, seminars and study visits.

Evaluation reports on all investment activities respectively have been produced and published on the project website. The final report summarizes all the project activities along with a socio-environmental-economic analysis of biogas production and upgrading to vehicle fuel. The final report has also been fitted into the national context of each partner country to further discuss how results and conclusions can be transferred to the development on clean buses in each country.

Achievements of the project so far:

Two different types of hybrid biogas electric city buses were procured: a 24 meter bi-articulated bus from the Belgian manufacturer VanHool was delivered to SKYSS public transport company in Bergen Norway in October 2014. A 12 m long hybrid city-bus from the Polish manufacturer Solaris was delivered to VL public transport company in Västerås Sweden in October 2014.

In total 18 eco-driving systems have been procured by Kauno Autobusai in Lithuania and Motor Transport Institute of Poland. Eco-driving has been tested in CNG buses in Kaunas, Rzeszow (Poland) and Tychy (Poland). Together with Bergen bus operator Tide, Skyss has also participated in testing eco-driving.

On behalf of Motor Transport Institute of Poland a small-scale mobile biogas upgrading facility has been installed at the landfill in Niepolomice during November 2014. The installation has upgraded landfill gas to biogas that subsequently has been used in a CNG bus. MTI has even produced a socio-environmental-economic report to analyse the benefits of upgrading biogas to transport fuel quality compared to using it for heat and power production.

Public events have been organized in Riga (Latvia), Västerås (Sweden), twice in Bergen (Norway), Kaunas (Lithuania) and Tychy and Warsaw (Poland). During the meeting in Västerås and the second meeting in Bergen biogas bus trips were organized which showed politicians from all partner countries biogas buses and production in Västerås and the new biogas hybrid bus in Bergen.

November 2014 the project organized an event in Warsaw on biogas upgrading and biogas use in city buses in Europe (focus on Poland) based on the results and findings of the project. In addition the project co-organized a sustainable cities conference in Warsaw together with the Swedish-Polish sustainable energy platform.

Communication outputs were factsheets on eco-driving, hybrid biogas buses and biogas upgrading; electronic newsletters and articles about the project scope and activities in national media and in the Pan European Networks publication. All along during the project implementation the internal and external parts of the project website www.balticbiogasbus.eu have been updated as well as continuous dissemination of fact sheets and experiences at events and conferences took place. The final report of the More Baltic Biogas bus project has been produced, which presents the experiences and lessons learnt from the project with particular focus on the project investments.
