Summary description of the project:
All Partner regions from the REMOWE main stage project were continuing and deepening co-operation in the extension stage project ABOWE. In REMOWE it had been concluded that efficient instruments are necessary in partner regions to increase the rate of utilizing waste into energy.
ABOWE project covered two technologies that rose from the REMOWE project: biorefinery and dry digestion. The novel biorefinery concept was evaluated in REMOWE to have the highest innovativeness and sustainability scores among the ideas presented in Finland and Estonia. REMOWE results also pointed out the potential to use dry digestion in biogas production. These two technologies were tested in semi-industrial mobile pilot plants. The pilot plants were designed, manufactured and tested with selected waste materials from selected potential implementers/investors. The tests provided with proof of technology for the both technologies of treating various organic wastes to convert them into valuable products.
The objective of ABOWE was through pilot plant tests and related activities to produce investment decision support information in form of Investment Memo for each testing region. Potential implementers&investors, such as sewage treatment plants, farms, food factories & waste management companies formed the key group of ABOWE associated organisations.
After start-up and training of testing partners and other stakeholders, the pilot plants were transported to testing regions for tests from the regions’ point of view. Testing of biorefinery took place in Finland, Poland & Sweden; testing of dry digestion took place in Lithuania, Estonia & Sweden.
The Investment Memo for each region included proof of technology as well as economical calculations, business plan and management plan. It is a manual for potential implementers & investors for implementing full scale applications of the two technologies and for respective investment opportunities.
The regional model, a key outcome from REMOWE, was used to evaluate the both technologies' economic&climatic impacts from each testing region's point of view, which facilitated compiling Investment Memos.
Key contents of Investment Memos were presented in specific Investor Events in each testing region to potential implementers&investors. The objective was also to enhance willingness to invest by answering (with the information produced) to the questions that implementers&investors are asking. These questions were listed in Letters of support, signed by potential implementers/investors (associated organizations).
Via Investment Memos&Investor Events ABOWE integrated potential implementers&investors to investments of full scale plants. The desired outcome from ABOWE are implementer/investor driven continuation projects targeting full scale investments of the two technologies.
ABOWE directly contributed to the Climate Change, Renewable Energy&Waste Management objectives of the EU.
Achievements of the project so far:
Future biorefineries will work according to the principles of Nature, using microbes and enzymes for upgrading wastes and other biomass into biofuels, other energy substances, platform chemicals, and organic fertilisers. The concept of ‘waste’ will become unnecessary in industries, communities, agriculture and forestry, since all materials are refined and recycled. The ABOWE project and pilots have paved the way to this industrial revolution.
Two mobile pilot plants (Pilot A Novel Biorefinery and Pilot B Plug Flow Dry Digestion) were produced and successfully tested in various locations with different biowastes across Baltic Sea Region. The overall concept of Pilot A turned out functional in Sweden, Poland and Finland and Pilot B functioned reliably in Lithuania, Estonia and Sweden. Technical reports, investment memos and regional modeling reports were produced for each testing region and investor events were organized in all of them.
The both plants are ideal for research, learning
(knowledge transfer, training) as well as demonstrating for people that have an interest in the technologies.
It was possible to give a three time proof of concept for both pilot plants and the technologies behind. It could be documented that the process optimization could take place in the next phase with some tested principles. Pilot A biorefinery pilot could operate as an upstream biorefinery for all kinds of organic wastes. The microbiological processes are operable. Best results could be obtained by connecting Pilot A unit to simultaneous downstream processing, and biogas production, such as Pilot B.
Technological cooperation was established between partners and contractors as well as testing sites. Many potential testing sites for future studies have emerged during the testing period.
Pilot plant tests and related activities produced investment decision support information in form of Investment Memo for each testing region.

Through activities and outputs potential implementers&investors learnt a lot about the technologies and were able to assess their applicability in solving their biowaste utilisation needs.
Overseas and domestic industries have exhibited solid interests for the use of Pilot A implementation into their process development tasks. Seed funding could help in evaluating the cases and in developing them further into viable projects in this emerging field. Pilot A has shown potential in adding value into organic waste utilization and in circulation economy applications. Pilot B has given incentives and promotions for various biogas plant investment processes in the Baltic countries.
