Hybrid biogas-electric buses
Date:
Jan 2015
URL:
Description:
Developing more energy efficient use of biogas in buses is key to the business case. To showcase this, investments in two different hybrid biogas-electric buses have been made. One is a 24-meter bi-articulated serial hybrid bus using a biogas engine to supply power to the electric drive-line. The bus is implemented and tested in Bergen, Norway. The other bus is a 12-meter bus using electric traction and biogas heating. By allowing all of the battery capacity to propel the bus, the biogas heating system acts as an indirect range extender. This bus is implemented and tested in Västerås, Sweden.

Biogas production is common in the EU, but upgrading of biogas to vehicle fuel quality is rarely done. This is a crucial step to supply biogas to more public transport buses. Investment in a small-scale biogas upgrading facility, which is installed at a landfill in Niepolomice, Poland, have been made. The upgraded biogas is tested and evaluated in CNG buses to showcase a greater use of biogas as fuel for buses in the EU. A socio-environmental-economical analysis of biogas upgrading, as opposed to producing heat or electricity, has also been done.
